Capacity Building Programme for Livelihood and Income Enhancement of Tribal Fishers

The decline in the access and availability of local natural resources have had an adverse impact on the subsistence economy of tribal communities which they had practiced for centuries in harmony with nature. ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow has undertaken a variety of technology-led development programmes and activities for the socio-economic development of tribal people in various areas of the country, under the Scheduled Tribes Component (STC) scheme of the Govt. of India. The Institute has implemented interventions to promote fisheries-based enterprises in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. In this context, the Institute organized a training program on Freshwater Aquaculture for Livelihood and Income Enhancement of Tribal Farmers for the beneficiaries from Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh during December 28-30, 2022 at Lucknow.

A total of 30 tribal farmers including women attended the training which included lectures, demonstrations, visits to live fish germplasm resource center of ICAR-NBFGR and Ganga Aquarium.

Trainee farmers also shared their experiences and constraints which were attended to by the Institute scientists. A training manual was prepared in Hindi and released on this occasion for the benefit of the farmers and relevant extension literature was also provided to the farmers. In the valedictory function,

Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR emphasized Institute’s commitment to serve the tribal farming community through its technology and input support programmes.
