Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya Shri. Ganga Prasad inaugurated a four days International Congress on cotton and other fibre crops at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya . The Congress is being organized by ICAR Research complex for NEH region in collaboration with the Cotton Research and Development Association (CRDA) Hisar and Indian Association of Hill Farming (IAHF), Umiam.
The Governor said that cotton is most widely used fibre in the world and the agricultural sector needs to make the most out of it. The aim of our Prime Minister to double the farmers’ income can be achieved if the intellectuals design an agricultural pattern in which cotton cultivation can be incorporated. The North Eastern Region needs the much needed insight into cotton cultivation. He further appreciated the efforts of ICAR in organizing such an innovative programme for the benefits of the farmers of the region. The agro climatic uniqueness of the region can be used as the boon for the region and he hoped that the technical sessions come up with the model agricultural designs for the region.
Dr. N Prakash, Director of ICAR Research complex for NEH region welcomed the dignitaries and spoke about the importance of the Congress and its relevance to the North East Region. He informed that India has placed itself as number one country in cotton production.
Shri Ram Muivah Secretary, NEC addressing the gathering appreciated the efforts of ICAR NEH in bridging the gap between the farmers and scientist and hoped that the congress will give the much needed technological support to the farmers of the region.
Dr. S.S Siwach Vice President, CRDA Hisar, speaking on the occasion gave an insight about the Cotton Research and Development Association; he said that agriculture and development go hand in hand and the region needs pioneering technologies for agricultural development and in the international congress will provide the much needed introspection for doubling farmers’ income.
Dr S.V. Ngachan, former Director, ICAR, RC NEH and the chairman of the organizing committee addressed the gathering and said the congress will be beneficial to be all those associated with cotton and other fibre crops. This is an excellent forum for researchers to interact and take a stock of the situation.
The organizing secretary of the programme Dr. Anup Das Principal Scientist ICAR RC NEH in his inaugural remarks said that the international congress aims at improving the livelihood of the farmers of the region and the blending of fibres’ could give brilliant results. He further added that the region has immense potential in banana, pineapple, ramie and sisal fibers which needs to be tapped.
The inaugural session witnessed a release of publications and various were given award under the segments of life time achievement award, professional excellence award and corporate advisor award.
