Fish Health Awareness Camp at East Kolkata Wetlands

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized a fish health awareness camp under National Aquatic Surveillance Programme on Aquatic Animal Diseases and Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav programme at Bantala village in East Kolkata Wetland area in collaboration with Department of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal today.

 The East Kolkata Wetlands,a Ramsar site,is famous for sewage fed fish farming butsusceptible to fish diseases outbreak which may cause severe losses to the fish farmers. The awareness camp was organized to sensitize about fish health and to secure sustainable livelihoods and nutritional security for them.

Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI urged the farmers to introduce feeding management practices for better management of fish health for increases productivity.

Dr.Priyanshi, Environmentalist, Institute of International Water Managementemphasized the importance of understanding theenvironmental and man-made changes in the wetlands to secure the livelihoods for the fishermen community.

Dr. V.V. Sadamate, former advisor, Planning Commissionemphasized that such type of extension activities shouldbe accelerated to minimize the research-farmer gap.

On spot fish disease diagnosis and water quality analysis was also done by team CIFRI, based on which proper recommendations were given to the farmers
More than, 70 fishermen including 9 fisher women, and members of four primary fishermen cooperative societies participated in the programme.
