Exploring the Possibility of Mithun Husbandry in Meghalaya- Farmers –Scientist Interaction in Mawphlang

ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland and KVK-East Khasi Hill District, Meghalaya jointly organised a two-day ‘Awareness Programme-cum-Farmers Scientist Interaction on Scientific Mithun Rearing” (21-22nd November 2016) at Mawphlang Village, Upper Shillong, East Khasi Hill District .The aim of the programme was to explore the possibilities of introducing Mithun (Bos frontalis) in Meghalaya.

Shri Kennedy C. Khyriem , MLA Mawphlang constituency said the programme  would bring awareness in local communities regarding adoption of mithun husbandry as an alternative source of livelihood. Scientific Mithun rearing would not only improve the livelihood of the farmers but also help in rejuvenation of the forests cover, he added.

Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRCM, in his welcome address apprized about the mandate of the Institute and various initiative and technologies generated. Mithun is “Natural Gardener” helps to conserve of forest eco-system and Mithun can also be metonym as Meat, Milk, and Money he added.

Shri L. Blah, MDC, Mawphlang constituency also graced the occasion.

An exhibition was laid out by ICAR Institutes, KVKs and State Government Department to display the farmer friendly technologies.

Directors and Senior Officials of ICAR Institutes and State Government attended the event.

About 150 farmers participated in the programme.
