A one-day training-cum-awareness programme on “Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act-2001” with special reference to paddy was organized on October 11, 2010 at Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), Cuttack. More than 100 participants including members of farmers’ organization, NGOs, training organizers from various KVKs of Orissa and State Department of Agriculture, Orissa participated in the programme. Principal Scientists and experts of the Act from CRRI imparted the training covering several important issues such as essence of PPV&FR Act 2001, plant variety protection and seed laws, procedures for registration of varieties and other related aspects. Farmers from several districts of Orissa were especially interested to know on “Farmers’ Rights and Strategy for Plant Variety Registration.”
While inaugurating the programme, Dr. T.K. Adhya, Director, CRRI outlined the overall significance of the programme and made farmers aware of their right as enshrined in the act on the preservation of rice varieties.
Information on the registration of farmers’ varieties and action plan for submission of application for extant varieties were also discussed so that farmers may get benefits and recognition through this important Act.
