KIRAN, a Knowledge Information Repository in Agriculture Launched

His Excellency the Governor of Meghalaya Sri Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary inaugurated 20th Regional Committee Meeting of ICAR (Region III- North-eastern states including Assam ) at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani, Shillong today. While addressing the participants, he urged agricultural research community to work for holistic agricultural development of the region especially for milk, mutton and other food products. This region was in food surplus situation in 17th century, but is now facing deficit due to growth in population, he added. Governor laid emphasis on further exploitation of amazing diversity in agriculture, horticulture and other sectors in the region by putting knowledge endeavors for higher productivity.
His Excellency suggested that double cropping may be adopted in the region instead of mono-cropping to raise productivity and maintain food security. Cultivation of strawberry in mid-hills may be promoted for livelihood security and it has already started paying dividends in the region. He reiterated application of knowledge in research as lot of scope exists for further advancement in agriculture and allied sectors.
Governor launched ‘Knowledge Information Repository in Agriculture’, KIRAN, which is an umbrella arrangement to harness the power of scientific knowledge and technology for more food production in NE region through dynamic partnership and convergence among stakeholders. He also released publications of interest.
Sri B.M. Lannong, Deputy Chief Minister, Meghalaya; Sri T.R. Zeliang, Minister for Veterinary & Animal Husbandry , Nagaland; Sri P. Parijat Singh, Minister for Agriculture and KADA, Manipur; and Sri H. Liansailova, Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Mizoram addressed the august audience. State specific issues were raised and opportunities were identified for further agricultural development.
Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR highlighted the research and extension strategies specific for the region in his address. He said that ICAR is continuously pursuing the vision of technology and innovation led sustainable agriculture ensuring food, nutritional and livelihood security. Dr. Arvind Kumar, Deputy Director General (Education), ICAR also addressed the guests and members of the Regional Committee. Earlier, Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Complex of NEH Region welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries and participants.
KIRAN has been launched by the ICAR with a mission to empower the agricultural production system of North-East region with right technology and methodology emphasizing innovative approach and solutions. ICAR envisages a NE cell for agriculture, to ensure an effective and efficient use of knowledge and technology products, promoting innovative approaches and solutions aimed at improving human resource with right knowledge skills in the NE region. It will act as a platform to foster linkages among partners and collaborate with public, private, state and regional organizations functioning in the region.
KIRAN will provide information on farming systems, technological consultancy and innovative solutions through single window arrangement. It will help in accelerating the research and extension systems towards farmers and stakeholders in the region. All ICAR institutes and regional centers in NE region, Agricultural Universities, State government departments, Zonal Project Directorate, relevant financial institutions will be the partners for this repository, besides a host of NGOs and other stakeholders.
