International Conference on climate change, Sustainable Agriculture and Public Leadership inaugurated Developmental Programme Needed for Addressing Climate Change Issues-Harish Rawat

'We should address climate change related issues in systematic manner through constructive and developmental programme to increase in productivity and profitability of small and marginal farmers', said Sri Harish Rawat, Minister of State for Agriculture & Food Processing Industries and Parliamentary Affairs. He was inaugurating International Conference on Climate Change, Sustainable Agriculture and Public Leadership (7-9 February) here today.

 

'Climate change effects will be more in Indian conditions as there are different agro-climatic zones. The most affected will be marginal and small farmer which constitute 80% of Indian farming community. Therefore, a comprehensive and multidimensional strategy is needed to mitigate climate change effects ', he said.

Earlier, Dr. William D Dar, Director General, International Crops Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) said that climate change is affecting every region in the world. 'The most affected will be the small and marginal farmers. To feed growing population we need to increase production up-to 75-100% by 2050. This will be a shared responsibility for everyone ', he added.

Singh, President, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in his Presidential Address emphasized on challenges arising out of climate change conditions. He suggested that resource management and appropriate use of bio-technology, nano-technology and microbiology can mitigate the adverse affects of climate change. 'Variability in climate should be given high priority and scientists, farmers and policy makers should move together to form new strategies', he said.

Singh, President, National Council for Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Public Leadership (NCCSD) suggested that technological support to small and marginal farmers can reduce the adversity of climate change.

Dr. J.C. Dagar, Assistant Director General, ICAR presented vote of thanks. Kantisen C. Shroff, Chairman, Shroff Group of Voluntry Organizations, Dr. Kirit Shelat, Executive Chairman, NCCSD also graced the occasion.
