Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) visited Brasilia and Sao Paulo, Brazil, leading a three-member delegation comprising the Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor, DARE/ICAR; and Assistant Director General (IP&TM), ICAR to discuss with the Senior Management of EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, Govt. of Brazil, during 6-8 February, 2012. Established in 1973, the EMBRAPA has a network of 47 Research Centres, with over 9,000 employees of which over 2,000 are researchers.
In a meeting with Dr. Pedro Antonio Arraes, President, EMBRAPA, where Mr. B.S. Prakash, H.E. Ambassador of India in Brazil was also present, discussions pertained to collaboration between ICAR and EMBRAPA in areas of Germplasm exchange, Agro-energy (biofuel; sugarcane-based ethanol), Soybean (cultivation and processing for biomaterials) and Animal reproduction. The mechanisms of collaborative projects, exchange of scientists and students and an interface meeting of scientists from ICAR and EMBRAPA in the four above areas were proposed to be included in the Indo-Brazil cooperation during the visit of the Brazilian President to India during March, 2012.
The Delegation visited the Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Centre (with programmes of plant and animal gene banking, biotech and biological control); the EMBRAPA Agro-Energy (production aspects of soybean, sugarcane, oilpalm, sweet sorghum as well as processing aspects for biodiesel and ethanol) at Brasilia and the EMBRAPA Instrumentation (with activities of agriculture and animal farming automation, Environment and Earth Science, Biotechnology and genetic improvement and Agro-industrialisation) at Sao Carlo. Visits were also made to the EMBRAPA Cattle Farm and Technology Park. Further, the two colleagues of the Delegation visited the EMBRAPA Soils and EMBRAPA Agrobiology at Rio de Janeiro.
