National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Lumami, Nagaland University jointly organized Health camp and training programme in Satakha block at Xuivi Village of Zunheboto district.
The main objective of the programme was to create awareness among the Mithun rearers regarding various types of diseases and their control and managemental factors that affect the productivity and reproductive capability of the animals. There are about 300 Mithuns in the village and Mithun farmers suffer heavily due to outbreak of FMD and anthrax. The villagers experienced heavy loss during 1988-89 when around 100 Mithuns died because of FMD. During the training programme detailed information regarding the preventive measures for various common disease outbreaks were provided. As the Mithuns are reared in forest and only common salt is the main input, Mithuns suffer from different deficiency diseases and reproductive problems. The farmers were advised to supplement mineral mixture to address the mineral deficiency problem. Mithumin an area specific mineral mixture developed by NRC on Mithun was also provided to the Mithun owners for feeding.
All together 41 farmers participated and large number of animals were vaccinated against FMD. During the vaccination programme the different samples were collected from Mithun for investigation of various diseases in the village. A distinctive kind of goat with long hairs is found in the village. These goats were also brought by the farmers for vaccination. Some of the goats were found infested with internal parasites and mineral deficiency so anthelmintics and vitamin supplements were provided.
Scientists from both the organizations answered the queries of the farmers regarding better livestock production and health management. Mr. Toshiho Naga, Village Council Chairman expressed his gratitude to the scientists and Director, NRC on Mithun for the efforts taken by them.
