Dr. Mahant Stressed the Need for Conservation of Indian Major Carps in Ganga

Dr. Mohant Stressed the Need for Conservation of Indian Major Carps in GangaDr. Charan Das Mahant, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industry, Government of India visited Allahabad Regional Centre of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute. On appraisal of the activities and achievements of the Centre, Dr. Mahant opined to work out feasible methods for effective conservation of valuable indigenous fish diversity and fishery and control on rapid invasion of the resilient exotic fishes in the major rivers. He appreciated the work done by the Centre on open water fisheries resources of the region in general and fish production enhancement activities in wetlands of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh in particular. He also showed satisfaction on recording of fish landing information from the river Ganga and Yamuna at Allahabad since last few decades. Dr. Mahant also stressed the need for conservation of valuable Indian major carps in the Ganga river system. He emphasised the pivotal role of the Centre in sustainable management of the fishery resources in assigned states.

Joshi, Principal Scientist and Head of the Centre gave a brief presentation about the history, achievements and activities of the Centre. Dr. Joshi explained the results of the projects completed in the XIth plan. He also explained about fish production enhancement activities in Bundelkhand region and on-going NICRA project on Impact Assessment of climate change on breeding behaviour of Indian major carps in Uttar Pradesh and mahseer, snow-trout and rainbow trout in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
