Prime Minister Declares Sikkim as First Organic State of India

Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister, while addressing the Conference of Agriculture Ministers of States here today, declared Sikkim as first organic state of India. He appreciated Sikkim for its transformation into an eco-friendly farming state. Hon’ble Prime Minister  inaugurated a state flower show and emphasized upon the need for promotion of vertical farming and cultivation of fragrant high value orchids for enhancing income of farmers. He released three Cymbidium orchid hybrids and named two of them as Cymbidium ‘Sardar' (after Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel) and Cymbidium ‘Deen Dayal' (after Shri Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay). The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Chamling, named one hybrid as Cymbidium ‘Namo' (after the Prime Minister).

Prime Minister declears Sikkim as First organic State in IndiaThe Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shri Radha Mohan Singh, along with Ministers of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare,  Dr Sanjeev Kumar Balyan and Shri Mohanbhai Kalyanjibhai Kundariya visited Sikkim on this occasion. Agriculture Minister interacted with the staff of ICAR institutes located in Sikkim and representatives of Central Agricultural University-College of Agricultural Engineering and Post-harvest Technology at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim centre on 17 January 2016. Shri Singhstressed the need of strengthening lab-to-land programme in presence of large number of progressive farmers of the state. The initiatives like Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav, Soil Health Cards and promotion of pulses and oilseeds must be given utmost priority by all concerned, he added.
