ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research, New Delhi celebrated its first Foundation Day after being rechristened as IIMR from the erstwhile Directorate of Maize Research.
Dr. BM Prasanna, Director of the Global Maize Program, CIMMYT & CGIAR Research Program, MAIZE delivered the First Foundation Day Lecture on “Doubling Maize Production of India by 2025”. Dr. Prasanna highlighted the greater need of enhancing the rate of improvement in productivity through use of doubled haploidy and molecular tools, in addition to the proper policy interventions through maintaining a balance between input and output markets (point file attached).
Dr. JS Sandhu, DDG (Crop Sciences), Chief Guest at this occasion, emphasized role of maize in developing climate resilient agriculture and called upon maize scientists to make sombre efforts to bridge the gap between achievable and realized maize yields at farmers’ field especially in rainfed farming system of kharif season.
Dr. JS Chauhan, ADG (Seeds), who was guest of honour, suggested finding new ways of Public-Private Partnership to upscale public-sector hybrid adoption.
Dr. IS Solanki ADG (FFC), also guest of honour, advocated integration of hybrid development and seed production.
Dr. OP Yadav, Director, ICAR-IIMR made detailed presentation on the ‘Six-Decades Journey of Maize Research in India’ encapsulating various strategic interventions deployed in maize research in the country (power point attached
A documentary ‘Amazing Maize – The Story of IIMR’ and ‘IIMR Newsletter’ were released.
Scientists, institute employees, progressive maize farmers and Entrepreneurs were felicitated for their significant contribution. Senior faculty of ICAR institutes, ICAR officials and Directors of ICAR institutes at Delhi, and representatives of Borlaug Institute for South Asia, Plant Protection Varieties and Farmer’s Rights Authority and National Seeds Corporation attended the programme.
