ICAR and IWMI to work for improving water productivity

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) participated in the ICAR-IWMI steering committee meeting organized at International Water Management Institute (IWMI) , Colombo , Sri Lanka during 7-8 July, 2016.

After deliberating on the research areas of mutual interest, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) and Dr. Jeremy Bird, DG, IWMI finalized the work plan of ICAR-IWMI research partnership for 2016-18 to develop, promote and accelerate close collaboration in the challenging areas of agricultural water management.

The major areas of scientific research collaboration and capacity building includes improving water productivity in agriculture and   water related disaster risk management. Influence of bench marking on canal irrigation performance and waste water management in peri-urban agriculture are the other areas of mutual cooperation.

Activities/projects to be undertaken in pursuant of the above research areas shall be prepared with mutual understanding and implemented during the period.

During the visit,  Secretay DARE and DG, ICAR also had discussion with the Chairman of Sri Lanka Council of Agricultural Research Policy (SLCARP) on the areas of mutual cooperation in agricultural and allied sectors.

Dr. Mohapatra encouraged Sri Lankan partners to harness the potential of workplan to the fullest extent.

The five member delegation visited IWMI Research facilities and outreach program on municipal solid waste composting, pressurised irrigation in shallow ground water, coastal sandy belt and canal water management in medium lands.
