“BRICS Experts Meeting for BRICS Agricultural Research Platform” (27-28 June, 2016) was conducted to discuss and develop the framework document of BRICS Agricultural Research Centre.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), Chaired the meeting and in his opening remarks highlighted the need to establish the BRICS Agricultural Research Centre with cooperation of member countries. However, there is need to harness the potentials and strengths of one or more countries for the benefit of all BRICS states, he mentioned that there is existing bilateral cooperation in agriculture research and education in identified activities between the BRICS countries
Shri Chhabilendra Roul, Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR), in his welcome address, elaborated the importance of the BRICS Agricultural Research Centre.
Shri A. A.Dimri, Joint Secretary, MEA, briefed about the decision of the 5th Meeting of the BRICS Agricultural Cooperation Working Group in Moscow held on 12-13 August, 2015 where India was asked to provide more information on the Centre with regard to the prioritized activities and funding requirements.
The representatives of the member countries namely, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa emphasized the importance of ensuring food security, eliminating hunger and poverty through increased agricultural production, productivity and sustainable management of natural resources.
A detailed Concept Note on BRICS Agricultural Research Centre was presented by India. The vision, mission, mandate, objectives, broad activities and mode of operation were discussed.
Officials from South Africa, China, Russia and Brazil, and Indian delegation from DARE, ICAR and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India participated in the meeting.
