Field Days on Freshwater Aquaculture

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar in association with O.T.E.L.P, Kandhamal and SVA, Kalahandi organized a series of five field days on freshwater aquaculture on 27 th , 28 th , 29 th , 30 th January and 2 nd February 2009. A total of 130 farmers including 80% SC & ST from tribal dominated Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts of Orissa participated in the programmes. Majority of the participants (58%) were women.

Dr. A.E. Eknath, Director, CIFA in his message reiterated that farmers could get high value nutrition by resorting to aquaculture. It is a tool to enhance income, employment and livelihood leading to alleviation of poverty. By combining agriculture with aquaculture farmers can get diversified products and decrease the risk of investment he added.

The aim of the programme was to expose the tribal farmers and farmwomen to new technologies in freshwater aquaculture and address their queries through direct interactions. Scientists demonstrated in participatory mode various aquaculture technologies like pond preparation, analysis of pond water and sediment, nursery management, disease control, quality seed production, hatchery management, integrated fish farming, culture of carps, prawn, magur, murrels, koi and ornamental fishes, cage culture, feeding methods etc. The farmers were urged to adopt scientific package of practices in order to maximize yield.

The farmers expressed that the exposure visits were of great help to them since it enhanced their level of knowledge and inspired them to undertake aquaculture activities on a scientific basis. Senior scientists of CIFA G.S.Saha, Radheyshyam, H.K.De, Kuldeep Kumar, D.N. Chattopadhyay, B.K. Das, and technical officers B. Mishra, Lekha Safui, U.L. Mohanty and Sukanti Behera coordinated the field days.
