As a part of ICAR initiative to organize technology demonstrations for demonstrating the production potential of modern technology on productivity of major pulses in 11 states of the country, first two day training programme of 40 Kirshi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) of Uttar Pradesh (25), Bihar (5), West Bengal (2) and Orissa (8) was organized by Zonal Project Directorate Zone-IV at Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur during 10-11 May,2010.
Dr. K.D.Kokate, Deputy Director General (Agriculture Extension) inaugurated the training programme and elaborated that special technology oriented programmes on 5 major pulse crops viz, pigeonpea, chickpea, lentil, urdbean and mungbean will be taken up in 137 districts of 11 states. A total of 6000 demonstrations will take place and will include technology modules on newly developed varieties; planting techniques, Integrated plant nutrient management, integrated weed management, integrated disease and pest management, intercropping and micro- irrigation system.
He made special mention of enhancement in pulses productivity from 3q/ha to 12 q / ha in Mahartashtra. He emphasized that the KVKs should work as knowledge and resource centre and should prepare capsules for broadcasting and telecasting for wider dissemination of technologies at ground level.
Dr. N. Nadarajan, Director, IIPR while welcoming the participants presented a brief account of pulse scenario in the country and emphasized the raised bed planting techniques, adoption of suitable varieties and monitoring of crops on important stages.
Dr. A.K. Singh, Zonal Project Director, Zone- IV referred the crop specific and district specific technology modules prepared for technology demonstrations. He advised that programme should be undertaken in cluster mode of not less than 10 acres and appealed the KVKs for ownership of the programme.
Technology demonstration on summer Moong
The first demonstrations have been conducted on summer moong on 88.5 acre area in 6 districts (Fatehpur, Kannauj, Etah, Faizabad, Sitapur and Etawah) of Uttar Pradesh. The demonstrations on summer moong on 25 acre in district Fatehpur were visited by Dr. K.D. Kokate, Dr. N. Nadarajan, Dr. A.K.Singh and Dr. B.B. Singh, Project Coordinator along with a group of farmers of 7 villages on 9th May, 2010. Dr. K.D. Kokate encouraged farmers to grow pulses, specially in rice-wheat system for enriching soil fertility, in addition to producing about 10q/ha of moong in 60 days.
Field day was organized in village Mohar, block Malva, District Fatehpur where the demonstrations on IIPR varieties ( Samrat, Meha and PDM-2-3) have been laid down in different cropping systems after the harvest of chickpea, mustard and wheat. The farmers shared their views with experts and fellows farmers. With the conduct of 25 acre of demonstrations, other farmers have been encouraged and 150 acre area have been brought under summer moong.
