Workshop on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture Held at Bhopal

The VI Workshop of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture (ESA) was organized at Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE), Bhopal on May 31 – June 2, 2012.

During his Inaugural Address, Dr. M.M. Pandey, Deputy Director General  (Agricultural Engineering), ICAR, lauded the work done by AICRP on ESA in creating farm safety awareness and developing safety devices/practices for minimizing accident in agriculture. The work done in generating anthropometric and strength data base of agricultural workers and its application in development of agricultural tools and equipments was also appreciated by him.

Dr. A.K. Tiwari, Deputy Advisor (Agri.), Planning Commission, Govt. of India highlighted the need of mechanization to meet the increasing demand of food production at reduced cost. He advocated that benefits of mechanization should reach to all the stakeholders including small and medium farmers and landless labourers.
Dr. N.P.S. Sirohi, Assistant Director General (Engg.) ICAR and Dr. P. Chandra, Director, CIAE also expressed urged the research engineers to strive for excellence and application of science in carrying out various research projects.

Dr. L.P. Gite, Project Coordinator highlighted the achievements of the Project of last two years which included various farmer-friendly equipments.About 50 participants from ten cooperating centres and the host institutes participated in the Workshop. During the workshop, progress report of various centres were discussed and further work to be done for taking the research results to the stakeholders was finalized. Research programmes and extension activities to be undertaken for next two years were also decided.

Dr. P.K. Nag, Director National Institute of Occupational Health and Chairman QRT of AICRP on ESA advised the group on ways to improve the quality as well output of research work. The participants visited ergonomics laboratory of CIAE to get acquainted with latest available instrumentation.
