You are truly ‘Shresth’, Eleventh Convocation of NDRI

Eleventh Convocation’ of NDRI, Karnal Dairy is not only an instrument of economic security but also nutritional security, said Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR. The ‘Eleventh Convocation’ of NDRI, Karnal was held at Karnal today. Dr Ayyappan was the Chief Guest of the function and delivered the ‘Convocation Address’.

He expressed that there are many challenges the country will encounter and ensuring the food security will be top on the agenda. The success story of Green Revolution, that was initially restricted to quantum jump in production of food grains, was closely followed by White Revolution which made India a global leader in milk production, said DG.

He congratulated the team of scientists and Director for their landmark success in the field of biotechnology, bringing world-wide acclaim to the nation. “You are truly ‘Shresth’, you have upheld the ‘Garima’ of ICAR and spread its ‘Mahima’ the world over”, he was quoted as saying. But the success of our research can only considered complete when the farmer starts reaping its benefits, he said.

Dr Ayyappan emphasized, the ultimate aim of the course curriculum of the University education should be the creation of opportunities for meaningful livelihoods for youth in the farm sector. He conveyed heartiest congratulations to the students who received the degrees and awards. At this occasion Chief Guest also released a compilation of memorable moments of past 90 years of NDRI.  

Eleventh Convocation’ of NDRI, Karnal Earlier, Dr. A. K. Srivastava, Director & Vice Chancellor delivered the welcome address. He informed that a new milestone was set by NDRI, when the first female calf in the world ‘Mahima’, was born on January 25, 2013 to a cloned buffalo ‘Garima-II’.

He highlighted that the research support through external funding has crossed Rs. 90 crores, which is highest ever in the history of NDRI. The institute is now holding ‘NDRI-Industry Meet’ every year to commercialize the technologies. Mother Dairy has already agreed to purchase the new test developed for detergent detection in milk.

During Convocation, 32 B. Tech., 133 Masters and 39 Ph.D. scholars were awarded degrees. Dr. K. Pradhan, an eminent Animal Nutritionist of international repute, was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding contribution to the overall growth of livestock sector in the country.

Eleventh Convocation’ of NDRI, Karnal Dr. Gurbachan Singh, Chairman, Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board, New Delhi was presented with 4th Dr. D. Sundaresan Memorial Oration Award for his significant contribution in the agricultural research. Gold Medals for Ph. D., Masters and B. Tech.  were awarded to Dr. Ram Dutt, Lalatendu Keshary Das and Ms. Bindu, respectively. Similarly, Silver and Bronze medals were also awarded in the respective categories. On this occasion, best teacher awards for PG & UG were awarded to the scientist Dr.  Bimlesh Mann and Dr. A. K. Singh, respectively. In addition, 8 teachers were given ‘Appreciation Letter’ for excellence in teaching. For overall contribution in research and teaching, the divisions of Dairy technology and Livestock Production & Management were awarded as Best Divisions.

Dr. K. M. L. Pathak, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), while presenting the merit certificates, complimented the brilliant students of NDRI. Dr. Arvind Kumar, Deputy Director General (Education), presented appreciation awards to the teachers. Dr. V. P. Singh, Joint Director (Academic) coordinated the whole programme. 

On this occasion, Dr. S. L. Goswami Director NAARM, Hyderabad Dr. M. L. Madan, Ex-DDG (Animal Science), Dr. Rameshwer Singh, Project Director, DKMA, New Delhi Dr. Rishendra Verma, Joint Director (Research),  NDRI, Dr. D. K. Sharma, Director CSSRI, Dr. B.K. Joshi, Director NBAGR, Dr. Indu Sharma, Project Director, DWR, Dr. S. S. Atwal, Sh. J. K. Kewalramani,  JD(A&R) Dr. S. K. Kanawjia, Academic coordinator and all heads of the divisions of NDRI, graced the function.
