Island Kisan Mela and Farm Innovators Meet Organized

Island Kisan Mela on the theme "Integrated Farming System for Livelihood Security" and Farm Innovators Meet organized on 12th & 13th February, 2013 at CARI, Garacharma Complex.

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, inaugurated the Mela. Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest Shri Ray appreciated CARI for conducting Kisan Mela as an annual event which provides an opportunity to the farmers as well as the scientists to interact with each other and witness the scientific innovations taking place in the field of agriculture and allied activities. He urged the CARI and Agriculture department to jointly conduct soil tests in the fields of the farmers and provide soil test health card enabling the farmers to go for the crop as per the nutrient prevailing in the field. He also released a book 'Technological Intervention and Farm Innovation - a way ahead for Island Farming Community' on the occasion

In his presidential address, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI, informed that this Institute is in the service of the islanders with scientific research in the field of agriculture and allied sectors for the last 35 years. He appreciated the participation of the farmers from different districts of the Island, especially the participation of tribal youths and Captains from Car Nicobar. He also informed about the proposal for opening a Regional Centers of CARI in Diglipur and Campbell Bay.

Shri M.A. Salam, Director, Agriculture, Shri J. Chandrasekhar, Director, Fisheries and Dr. P. Balakrishnan, Director, AHVS of A&N Administration also addressed the gathering on the occasion.

During the Valedictory function, Dr. Shashi Kumar, PCCF & Principal Secretary, A & N Administration was the Chief Guest and Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI presided over the function. Dr. Shashi Kumar expressed his satisfaction on conduct of such mega event which has given opportunity to the farmers from far-flung area, scientists, officials of the Development departments and others to meet, interact and share their experiences. He requested the scientists to do the work as per the need of the stakeholders so that the technology gets adopted in real sense.

More than 1500 students and farmers participated and interacted with scientists in the meet. Progressive farmers also facilitated on the occasion.
