FMD pen-side diagnostic and ELISA Released and Technology Transferred

Release of Two diagnostic kits for detection of Non Structural Protein (NSP), 3ABC antibodies to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Two diagnostic kits for detection of Non Structural Protein (NSP), 3ABC antibodies to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) were released by Shri Sharad Pwar, Union Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries on the 85th ICAR Foundation Day and Award Ceremony (16th July, 2013) held at New Delhi. The two kits developed by team of scientists at IVRI, Bangalore are intended for differentiation of infected animals in a FMD vaccinated population.

  • A rapid test which gives results in 5-10 minutes of time and
  • A laboratory based test- ELISA which gives results in 3 hours.

Both the tests can be used to detect FMD-NSP antibodies in all species of animals susceptible to FMD.

Release of Two diagnostic kits for detection of Non Structural Protein (NSP), 3ABC antibodies to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) The kits were transferred for commercial manufacture through the MOU signed between IVRI (ICAR) and M/s ubio Biotechnology Systems Private Limited, Cochin on 17 July 2013 in the presence of Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, Dr. K.M.L. Pathak, DDG (Animal sciences), Dr. Gayaprasad, Director, IVRI, Dr. R.Venkataramanan, Joint Director IVRI campus, Bangalore, Dr. P. Joshi, Joint Director (Research), Dr. Puneet Kumar (Principal scientist & In-charge, ZTM-BPD) and Dr. Madhusudan, Senior scientist, IVRI, Bangalore.  Dr. V.I. Bishor, Director, M/s ubio Biotechnology signed on the behalf of the company.

Rapid test based on LFD (lateral flow device) test can be performed by the farmers or field veterinarians at the farm level. Test does not need cold chain maintenance thus are handy under field conditions. The other test, ELISA is a laboratory based diagnostic, requiring trained personnel to perform and interpret the results. The latter is highly precise with diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 98% and 97.4%, respectively has performance comparable to similar commercial kit. The tests which use recombinant protein expressed in insect cells, are highly cost effective compared to similar commercial kits marked world-wide. Rapid test and ELISA currently priced at a cost of Rs 40 and Rs 25 have high demand in the national and international market.
