A Group Meeting on “Contingent Planning in Agriculture and Allied Sectors due to Extreme Rainfall Events in Uttarakhand” was held on 1st and 2nd August, 2013 at CSWCRTI, Dehradun to evolve work plan for agricultural and allied sectors in the state.
In his address, Dr S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR highlighted the main action points such as control of silts and sediments, planning for rabi crops to compensate the losses incurred in the ongoing kharif season, promotion of location-specific horticultural and vegetable crops, and supply of necessary feeds, fodder and healthcare interventions for livestock and fisheries sectors, preferably adopting a community approach.
Earlier, Dr. A.K. Sikka, DDG (Natural Resource Management) emphasized upon the doable and location-specific action plans of agricultural and allied sectors for rehabilitation and restoration of the affected areas. Discussions were held on natural resource management, crops, horticultural & vegetables, livestock, poultry and fisheries by subject expert from different institutions for drawing action points. Later on, a tentative action plan was presented to Dr. Ranveer Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Uttarakhand.
Later, Dr. S. Ayyappan and Dr. A. K. Sikka with a team of scientists also met Shri Vijay Bahuguna, Chief Minister, Uttarahand. DG, ICAR appraised him about the interaction meeting held at the CSWCRTI and the action points that emerged so as to enable the State Government to provide relief to the affected people in agriculture and allied sectors.
More than hundred senior-level scientists and multidisciplinary technical experts from over 20 research Institutes of ICAR, SAUs and KVKs under National Agricultural Research System (NARS) located in the Uttarakhand region, Directors of Agriculture & Animal Husbandry, Government of Uttarakhand, Vice Chancellors and Directors of ICAR Institutes/SAUs also participated in the meeting.
