Shri Sharad Pawar, Union Minister of Agriculture & Food Processing Industries, Government of India inaugurated the ‘Office cum Laboratory Building’ of National Research Centre on Pomegranate on 7th July 2013 at Solapur. Shri Pawar was the Chief Guest while Shri Sushil kumar Shinde, Union Minister of Home Affairs, Government of India presided over the function. He unveiled the inaugural stone at the centre.
While addressing the gathering, Shri Pawar emphasized upon the need to improve production of other commodities such as pulses, fruits, milk and dairy products, meat, fishes and aquatic produce to fulfill national nutrition requirement. He suggested to improve our present pomegranate productivity from 7 tons/ha. in order to become at par with other countries like Turkey (27 tons/ha.), Spain (20 tons/ha.) and America (20 tons/ha.).
In the presidential speech, Shri Shinde appreciated the efforts taken by the institute and expressed his satisfaction on establishment of the centre within such a short period.
Dr. Vijay kumar Gavit, Minister of Horticulture and Medical Education, Government of Maharashtra and Shri Dilip Sopal, Minister of Water Supply and Sanitation, Government of Maharashtra informed the gathering about role of Horticultural crop in improving economic status of the farmers and mentioned various schemes and steps taken by the state to tackle important issues of the farmers.
In his special remarks, Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR briefed the gathering about the various research aspects and role of ICAR in promoting agricultural production of the country. He also informed about the future strategies and researchable issues chalked out by NRCP and assured for immediate solution on various burning problems of pomegranate production.
Members of Legislative Assembly, Members of Parliament, Mayor, Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, DDG (Horticulture), Dr. S. K. Malhotra, ADG (Horticulture) and Directors from ICAR institutes were also present on the occasion.
