ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, Gangtok organized a farmers’ capacity building programme on ‘Enhancing scopes for organic rice production and up-scaling opportunities under RKMP’ during 10-12 September, 2013. This programme was organized with the aim to build the capacity of the organic rice growers of Sikkim about the recent developments in organic rice production technologies keeping eye upon the role of rice knowledge management portaland its use for effective transformation of rice knowledge and information as a viable factor of production.
Shri S. Pradhan, Secretary, Food Security and Agricultural Development and Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department, Government of Sikkim inaugurated the event on 10th September, 2013. In his address, Shri Pradhan said that there is immense variability among rice cultivars in the NEH region due to selection made unknowingly by various ethnic groups inhabiting at different altitudes and climatic situations. He emphasized upon the documentation of different forms of cultivation Rice Knowledge Management Portal (RKMP). Shri Pradhan also expressed concern over the low productivity of rice in NEH region and called upon the scientists to develop farmers’ friendly low-cost and sustainable organic production technologies in a participatory mode.
As Guest of Honour, Dr. R. P. Medhi, Director, NRC for Orchids, Pakyong shared his experience of working with SRI technology that enhanced the productivity to the 30-40 percent in Andaman Islands. He also suggested farmers to make best use of the first ever RKMP portal.On this occasion, Dr. R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex, Sikkim Centre, Tadong highlighted achievements in rice research. He informed the gathering that rice shares about 43% of total national food grain production of the country.
Earlier, Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Programme Coordinator, KVK, East Sikkim welcomed the dignitaries and justified the information sharing mechanisms of RKMP developed under NAIP-I in harnessing the rice knowledge among the rice stakeholders for enhancing the rice production to meet the Vision 2020 envisaged target of 121 million tonnes.
Rice Knowledge Management Portal (www.rkmp.co.in) has been developed under the aegis of NAIP-I project ‘Development and Maintenance of Rice Knowledge Management Portal’ in a partnership mode with Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad (CPI) as the Consortia Leader along with eight Consortium Partners (Co-PI Centres) from different regions of the country.
Scientists and officials from ICAR Sikkim Centre, Gangtok; College of Agricultural Enginneering and Post Harvest Technology, CAU, Ranipool, Sikkim; Sikkim Marketing Federation, Government of Sikkim and Department of FSAD, Government of Sikkim and more than thirty rice growing farmers representing four districts of Sikkim along with ICAR Scientists, KVK and delegates from other departments and NGOs participated in this 3-day programme
