Governor of Iowa Laid a Wreath at the Statue of Dr. Norman Borlaug

On his visit to India, H.E. Mr. Terry Branstad, Governor of the State of Iowa, USA laid a wreath at the statue of Dr. Norman Borlaug at NASC complex, New Delhi here today.

Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Mr. Branstad said that he is feeling proud that India is also honouring Dr. Borlaug. While remembering Dr. Borlaug’s work, he said that feeding the people and helping the nations in self sufficiency in food grain production was the only dream of Dr. Borlaug. He also underlined the contributions and services of Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug in enabling South Asian region self-sufficient in food production. Mr. Branstad also informed that on the occasion of Dr. Borlaug’s 100th birth anniversary, Government of USA will set up two statue of Dr. Borlaug in each state of Iowa and Washington (D.C.).

In his special remark, Shri Arvind R. Kaushal, Additional Secretary, DARE and Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research highlighted the contributions of Dr. Borlaug in Indian agriculture and said that we can think of no greater tribute to Dr. Borlaug than to carry on the work to which he dedicated his life, applying agricultural science for human benefits. He also informed the delegates that in the month of August, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon'ble President of India inaugurated the 5th BGRI (Borlaug Global Rust Initiative) 2013 Technical Workshop while Dr. M.S. Swaminathan inaugurated ‘The 50 PACT’- an event to celebrate 50 years of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug’s first visit to India.

Earlier, Dr. Swapan K. Datta, Deputy Director General (Crop Sciences), ICAR welcomed the dignitaries and briefed the gathering on Dr. Norman Borlaug’s association in Indian Green Revolution.

Foreign delegates, senior officials and scientists from ICAR, CIMMYT and CGIAR institutions were also present on the occasion.
