NBFGR Organized International Workshop on Indian Mackerel Genetics Harmonization

The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow, in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) project organized an International Harmonization Training Workshop on Indian Mackerel Genetics from the 20th-27th of August, 2013 at NBFGR Kochi unit.

In the inaugural session, Dr. J. K. Jena, Director, NBFGR welcomed the dignitaries and presented an overview of the BOBLME project on Indian mackerel genetics and the capabilities of NBFGR for conducting International level training programmes. Dr. Rudolf Hermes, Chief Technical Officer BOBLME inaugurated the programme while, Dr. E. G. Silas, former Director CMFRI and ex-Vice Chancellor Kerala Agricultural University presided over the function.

Dr. B. Meenakumari, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR was the Chief Guest of valedictory function of the workshop. Dr. Meenakumari distributed the certificates to the participants on successful completion of the training programme. Dr. K. Vijayakumaran, DG, FSI and National Coordinator BOBLME, Dr. T. K. Srinivasa Gopal, Director CIFT, Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Director CMFRI and Dr. J. K. Jena, Director, NBFGR were also present in the valedictory function.

Participants received hands-on training on various aspects of genetic characterization and population genetic structure analysis of Indian Mackerel. A total of 12 theory classes and eight sessions of practical classes were conducted in the programme. Participants were taken to M/s Scigenom, the genome sequencing facility available at Kochi, to get first hand information about the next generation sequencing techniques. A total of 16 delegates from different countries in the Bay of Bengal region; Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated in the workshop.
