Unique Wheat and Barley Repository at DWR, Lahaul-Spiti

Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR visited the Regional Station of Directorate of Wheat Research (DWR) at Dalang Maidan, Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh on 16-17 October, 2013. Dr. Ayyappan appreciated the role of this station for wheat improvement programme in the region. He interacted with farmers of Lahaul valley and emphasized upon the training and exposure of farmers on improved crop production technologies. Dr. Ayyappan also visited the KVK, Bajoura (Kullu), KVK, Kukumseri (Lahaul- Spiti), Northern Temperate Research Station, Garsa (Kullu) and IARI Regional Station, Katrain and discussed the research activities with the scientists.

Dr. (Mrs.) Indu Sharma, Project Director, DWR, Karnal highlighted that more than 43,000 lines of wheat and barley were grown at the station for generation advancement. Dr. Sharma also informed that the station serves as one of the national wheat and barley repository, maintained under the natural conditions in a cost-effective manner and at present, about 9,000 wheat and 2,000 barley accessions are conserved that have germination capacity even after 10 years of conservation.

Scientists from DWR, Karnal, CSKHPKV, Palampur, IARI Regional Station and respective KVKs were also present during the visit.
