National Research Centre for Orchids, ICAR, Pakyong, Sikkim organized 4th Kisan Mela (Farmers’ Fair) on 12th February, 2014 at State Community Hall, Pakyong with joint sponsorship of National Horticulture Board (NHB).
Shri Dawa Narbu Takarpa, Minister of Health Care, HS and FW, Food Security and Agriculture Development, Horticulture and Cash Crop Development and Parliamentary Affairs Department, Govrtnment of Sikkim inaugurated Kisan Mela-2014 as the Chief Guest. He said floriculture has good scope in Sikkim and Government of Sikkim has taken many steps to encourage farmers by distributing various inputs like plant materials, polyhouses etc. Government is also arranging for proper packaging and cold storage facilities for better supply of the flowers from the state. Shri Takarpa distributed farm implements arranged from NAIP Project among farmers.
Dr. R.P. Medhi, Director, NRC for Orchids briefed about the significance of Kisan Mela.
Earlier, Dr. Syamali Chakrabarti, Senior Scientist welcomed the dignataries.
Shri D.K. Rai, Principal Director cum Secretary, Horticulture and Cash Crop Development; Shri P.T. Bhutia, Principal Director cum Secretary, Agriculture Department; Dr. K.K. Sathapathy, Former Director, National Institute of Research for Jute and Allied Fibre Technology (NIRJAFT), Kolkata; Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, representatives from various Central and State Government departments like Agriculture, Horticulture and Cash Crop Development, SIMFED were present on the occasion. Over 17 progressive orchid growers exhibited their produce and 150 farmers from of Sikkim participated in the event.
In technical session, scientists shared their knowledge on production, protection and post harvest technologies of orchids.
