A five day (11-15th March, 2014) National Training Programme on ‘Advances in Weed Management Technology’ was organized at Directorate of Weed Science Research (DWSR), Jabalpur for agricultural officers of Uttar Pradesh.
In his inaugural address, Dr. P.K. Singh, Principal Scientist and Course Director welcomed participants and briefed about the objectives and content of the programme.
Dr. B.P. Tripathi, Joint Director Agriculture, Government of Madhya Pradesh and the Chief Guest of the function emphasized the need of such trainings.
Presiding over the function, Dr. A.R. Sharma, Director, DWSR explained weed control technology as the fastest adopted technology by the farmers. He also focused on the importance and purpose of the training and appraised the trainees with importance of conservation agriculture for sustainable crop production.
Trainees were also exposed to the practical aspects of weed identification, spraying techniques, mechanical weeding tools, climate change, weed utilization, bio-control agents, herbicide residue analysis, HRCs and conservation agriculture. Field visits at experimental farms of DWSR and Borlaug Institute for South Asia, Jabalpur were also organized.
In technical sessions, 20 lectures covering cultural, mechanical, biological, chemical and integrated weed management were delivered by the scientists/experts from DWSR. Over 25 farmers participated in the programme.
