Dr. N.K. Krishna Kumar, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi inaugurated Biotechnology and Tissue Culture Laboratory at Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH), Old Air Field Rangreth, Srinagar on 5th May, 2014. The laboratory is well equipped with latest hi-tech facilities to deal with latest biotechnological interventions and plant tissue culture aspects in temperate horticultural crops.
In his remarks, He emphasized upon the utilization of latest biotechnological tools in disease diagnosis and prognosis, production of virus free clonal root stocks in cherry, apple and other fruit crops, gene expression studies, use of micro array based diagnostics, identification and development of male sterile lines, association mapping etc.
Dr. Kumar also interact with Prof. Nazeer Ahmed, Director, CITH; Dr. D.B. Singh, In-Charge Laboratory; Dr. Javid Iqbal Mir, Scientist, Biotechnology; and Research Associates. Prof. Ahmed gave detailed overview of research activities going on at CITH. Dr. Kumar appreciated the contribution and development of CITH in very shorter period of time.
Dr. Kumar visited experimental fields where the high density plantations and new high yielding varieties in apple and almond were shown.
