NAAS Foundation Day 2014 Foundation Day Lecture by Prof. C.N.R. Rao

Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao, reputed scientist and Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, delivered Foundation Day lecture of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) here today. While speaking on the theme “Doing Science in India”, he appreciated that agricultural scientists are working for the farmers with passion, zeal and love and this has led to self sufficiency in food production with surplus food grains. Prof. Rao emphasized the urgent requirement to enhance the investment in scientific research and development including agriculture by citing examples of various other countries that invest heavily in this sector. At the same time, scientists must learn to do good science under various constraints, as exemplified by great scientist of India like Shri S. Ramanujan and Sir C.V. Raman.
Prof. Rao stressed that science must percolate to end users and general public for raising the scientific awareness and temper that leads to overall development of the society and the nation as a whole. He called upon agricultural scientists to interact and motivate school and college students for developing interest in the agricultural sciences so that we may not feel the crunch of scientists in near future. Welfare of the farmers, especially small farmers must remain in our focus in all our scientific pursuits, he said.
Prof. Rao felicitated Padma Awardees of this year in the field of agriculture, namely Dr. M. Mahadevappa (Padma Bhushan), Dr. Brahma Singh (Padma Shri) and Dr. Ajay Parida (Padma Shri). Chief Guest also released latest publications of the NAAS.
Dr. S. Ayyappan, President, NAAS and Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR welcomed the Chief Guest and apprised him about the various activities of NAAS.
Dr. P.L. Gautam, Vice President, NAAS presented a brief introduction of Prof. C.N.R. Rao.
Dr. R.S. Paroda, Former President, NAAS; Dr. R.B. Singh, Immediate Past President, NAAS; Dr. Panjab Singh, Former Vice President, NAAS; Shri Arvind Kaushal, Additional Secretary, DARE and Secretary, ICAR; and Dr. Gurbachan Singh, Chairman, ASRB also graced the occasion.
Dr. M.P. Yadav, Secretary, NAAS delivered the welcome address and Dr. N.K. Singh, Secretary, NAAS proposed vote of thanks.
Fellows and Associates of the NAAS, senior officials of ICAR and other related institutions participated in the event.
