A Two-days training was organized by Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla in collaboration with CAZRI-Regional Research Station (RRS), Leh; KVK (SKUAST(K), Leh and State Department of Agriculture, Leh at Nang and Egoo villages. A total of 150 farmers from both the villages participated in this training programme. Experts scientists from CPRI Shimla and RRS-CAZRI gave lecture on different aspects of potato cultivation during this training programme. In the beginning, Dr M.S. Raghuvanshi, Sr. Scientist (Agronomy), CAZRI-RRS brought into the notice of the experts the major cultivation practices, prevailing in these two villages for growing potato for seed as well as for marketing. Dr. N.K. Pandey from CPRI Shimla briefed about the schedule of the training programme and motivated farmers to adopt new varieties and improved production technology of potato. Dr Vinay Bharajdwaj explained how the new varieties are developed and productivity can be improved. Few varieties such as Kufri Himalani, Giriraj are suitable under Leh condition. Farmers showed lot of interest in new varieties. Dr. Roy delivered the incidence of diseases in potato and informed the farmers to be aware of the major diseases. Dr Ajaz and Dr Aamir from KVK, Leh informed the farmers that soil testing lab has been established where analysis for major nutrients may be carried out before planning for fertiliser application. The team of experts also visited the potato fields of local area where farmers have been provided with breeder seed of potato from CPRI. CPRI and CAZRI scientists demonstrated how potato is sown for getting better yield.
