Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources launched at IINRG, Ranchi

The Launch-cum-Orientation Workshop of the Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources was organized on August 27-28, 2014 at  Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums, Ranchi. IINRG, Ranchi as Lead center would implement the project in collaboration with eight cooperating centers: (i) ANGRAU, Hyderabad (ii) AAU, Jorhat (iii) CAU, Imphal (iv) MPUAT, Udaipur (v) PAU, Ludhiana (vi) SKUAST, Jammu (vii) KFRI, Thrissur and (viii) SFRI, Jabalpur.Dr. KK Sharma, Project Coordinator presented the objectives, plan of action and expected outcome from the Project.

Earlier on August 25, 2014, Union Minister of Agriculture, Shri Radha Mohan Singh had released the launch brochure of the Network Project.

While lauding the efforts of IINRG in launching the Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources, Chief Guest Dr. DK Srivastava, PCCF, Jharkhand showed his concern over loss of lac insect biodiversity due to unplanned developmental activities. He hoped that the network project would help in creating conditions that would be helpful in natural propagation of lac insect.

On this occasion, Dr. R Ramani, Director, IINRG emphasized on the importance of conservation of lac insects in  the current context. He informed that the project partners have been selected from different agro-ecological regions as lac insect is influenced by the climatic conditions. Special Guest, Dr. SA Ansari highlighted the contribution of lac cultivation in livelihood generation especially the tribal region of the country.

The workshop covered various aspects of lac including cultivation,pest management; application of biotechnology in lac; processing and application. The programme also included field and museum visits.

Dr. KK Singh, ADG (Farm Engg.), ICAR chaired the Plenary Session held on August 28, 2014. He emphasized on a good beginning and exhorted the delegates to give their best for achieving the deliverables.
