The ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack celebrated its “71st Foundation Day and Dhan Diwas” today..
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, New Delhi, in his inaugural address congratulated the farming and scientific communities for estimated record production of rice as well as overall food grains during 2016-17 despite all vagaries of weather due climatic change. However, he highlighted on the goal set by Honourable Prime Minister of India of ‘Doubling Farmers Income by 2022’. To achieve this, he emphasized on integration of suitable technologies in different farming situations, crop diversification, linking all farmers with the market, exploring all options for value addition to agricultural produces, women empowerment and encouraging participation of youths in agriculture, especially in post-harvest activities. He acknowledged the contributions of the institute in bringing green revolution to the country during mid 1960s and becoming a rice exporter. He also briefed about the new initiatives and policies of the Government of India including PMFBY, PMKSY, PKVY, NFSM, Soil Heath Card etc. for the welfare of farmers and farmwomen.
On this occasion, the chief guest inaugurated an Agricultural Exhibition and felicitated seventeen rice farmers/farmwomen from Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya for their innovative practices in rice-based farming. Six research and technology bulletins and Odia version of the riceXpert mobile app were released by the dignitaries. He also inaugurated 238 KW Roof Top Solar Power system, which will cater to nearly fifty percent of electrical energy requirement of the institute.
Padmashree Dr. Ajay Kumar Parida, Director of the Institute of Life Science, Bhubaneswar, and Guest of Honour appreciated the contributions of the institute in bringing national food and nutritional security through high quality research outputs. He urged the scientists to work hand in hand with the farming communities in the field and help them to boldly face new challenges in agriculture with greater confidence. He also delivered the Foundation Day Lecture.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director, ICAR-NRRI and Chairman highlighted the significant achievements of the institute, like eleven recently released varieties including two high protein rice namely, CR Dhan-310 & 311, rice-value chain and IT-enabled riceXpert mobile app in Odia and English.
Directors, heads of regional stations and other of local ICAR institutes; officers of state line departments and over 250 farmers & farmwomen from Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkahnd and Odisha participated in the programme.
Special programs like, field visit for the farmers, scientists-farmers interaction (Kisan Gosthi), various competitions among the staff children and research scholars, and cultural evening were organized for the visitors and staff of the institute. In the evening programme, winners of different competitions, meritorious children of staff and participants of the cultural events were awarded with certificates and prizes by Mrs. Kalpana Mohapatra, wife of the Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR.
