Two-day 10th National Conference of Krishi Vigyan Kendras-2018 (16-17 March 201) begins at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi today. The theme of the conference is “Technology for Doubling farmers’ income”.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), in his opening remarks appreciated the work done by KVKs of the country. However, he urged the Heads of KVKs to redefine their role for doubling the income of farmers. He further said that there is ample scope for doubling farmers’ income and need to shift from production to market-led system for higher return. Intensified diversification, processing, value addition, marketing and forming farmers producers’ organisations (FPOs) will help in enhancing the profitability of the farmers. Although, there is great challenge in formation and managing FPOs but it is possible as there are some success stories reported in the country.
Shri Chhabilendra Roul, Special Secretary (DARE) and Secretary, ICAR lauded the efforts of KVKs for increasing the pulse production in last two years and making the country almost self-sufficient in it. He said there is challenge to make farmer an entrepreneur for increasing his income. Most of the farmers are small and marginal farmer and are vulnerable and cannot take risk as he is resource poor, he added. Shri Roul said FPOs can reduce the input cost, give farmers more stake in marketing and value chain.
In his introductory remark, Dr A.K. Singh, DDG (Agril Ext), ICAR said that integration of National Conference of KVKs and Krishi Unnati Mela deployed amicably. He said various village models are being developed for improving farmers income.
More than 900 delegates across the country from 680 KVKs, SAU, ICAR Institutes participated in the national conference.
At the outset of the conference, Dr V.P. Chahal ADG (Agril Ext) welcomed the dignitaries, all the delegates and Dr Randhir Singh, ADG (Agril Ext) proposed formal vote of thanks.
