The ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh organized the Brainstorming Session on “Status of Red Rot Disease of Sugarcane in India and its Management” today.
Inaugurating the Session, Dr. Tilak Raj Sharma, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR stressed on the need for the visual and molecular diagnostics of red rot of sugarcane. Dr. Sharma regarded the resistance breeding, development of Artificial Intelligence based sensors, prediction model, gene mapping and gene editing as the need of the hour. He also emphasized on the tissue culture raised healthy planting materials for protection from the sett-borne disease.
The DDG also inaugurated the Newly Constructed Building of the Soil Testing Laboratory of the Institute and released the Coffee Table Book - IISR @70: A Memoire during the occasion.
Dr. S.C. Dubey, ADG (Plant Protection and Bio Security), ICAR accentuated for the replacement of the most popular variety of Sugarcane Co 0238 with Co 98014, Co 0118, Co 15023, CoLk 14201 and CoS 13235, etc.
Dr. R.K. Singh, ADG (CC), ICAR stressed on developing the red rot resistant varieties of Sugarcane, quality seed production and identification of the different races of Colletotricatum falcatum along with the basic research on red rot.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, ICAR-IISR briefed on the huge economic losses caused by red rot and contribution of the Institute in managing this disease.
Underlining the ill-effects of the monoculture, Dr. R.B. Daule, Chief Cane Advisor, NFCSF, New Delhi stated that no variety should be cultivated in >50% area. The need of developing an integrated strategy for the management of red rot was accentuated by him.
The Senior Officials of ICAR Institutes and State Government Departments also participated in the Brainstorming Session.
