Detoxified Neem

Neem seed kernel cake, a protein rich (35-40%, CP) agro-industrial by-product hitherto utilized as fertilizer-cum-pesticide, was found unsuitable for animal feeding due to presence of bitter and toxic triterpenoids (azadirachtin, salanin, nimbin, nimbidiol etc.).The bitterness of neem is attributed to limonoids which are the triterpenoids. After removal of oil from the seeds and proper detoxification, the residue can be converted into wholesome protein substitute (having 50 % CP). Longterm feeding trials using male lambs demonstrated safe use of detoxified neem cake as a replacement of soybean meal nitrogen up to 50% level.
