ICAR-IIMR dedicates Millets Processing Unit to FPOs on eve of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad is working exclusively on Millets and helps in the promotion of millets through Farmer Producer Organizations and doubling farmers' income in view of the International Year of Millets- 2023. The institute is acting as Cluster Based Business Organization (CBBO) for the promotion and handholding of 33 Millets Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in four states viz., Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh to implement its “Millets FPO Model”.

In order to provide a processing facility to millet farmers and FPOs, ICAR-IIMR established a millet-processing unit on eve of Independence Day & Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. and an MOU was also signed with Nabhitha Engineering Private Ltd. & Rotary Club, Krishi Rajendranagar for establishing primary processing unit at premises of ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad.

The unit was inaugurated by Dr. C. V. Ratnavathi, Director, ICAR-IIMR, in presence of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Former Director, ICAR-IIMR & President Rotary Club Krishi Rajendranagar, Mr. Raghu General Manager of Nabhitha Engineering Private Ltd. and other members of Rotary club.

ICAR-IIMR celebrated “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” by installing a primary processing unit of millets for helping shareholders of FPO.

Dr. Sangappa and Dr. Srinivas Babu of FPO Unit, ICAR-IIMR have taken the initiative of Public Private Partnership (PPP) for installing this millets unit to cut off the bottlenecks faced by millet farmers during processing.

This unit will help FPO and farmers to process their millets at nominal cost at IIMR, Hyderabad. It will also encourage the fellow farmers to cultivate millets by means of which the area under millets will increase.

ICAR-IIMR primary processing unit provides better marketing linkages to millet farmers through their enriched grains by which they will receive fair prices for their produce. It will also provide hands-on training to FPOs & farmers on the value addition of millets.
