Shri Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare inaugurated the "Virtual Annual Zonal Workshop of KVKs under ICAR-ATARI, Umiam"
organized by the ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Umiam through video conferencing today.
Accentuating on increasing the area and production of pulses and oilseeds in North-Eastern Hills Region, the Minister urged the Krishi Vigyan Kendras for playing a key role in promoting the sustainability in agriculture owing to great potential of the region in the organic farming. Shri Choudhary stressed on forming and strengthening the Farmers' Producers' Organizations (FPOs) in the region for doubling the farmers’ income by 2022.
Applauding the efforts of Ms. Trinity Saïoo, the Padmashree Awardee from Meghalaya on her outstanding achievements in the field of production and promotion of high quality variety of turmeric, the Minister urged the KVKs for getting benefited by the Government's welfare Schemes like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Kisan Rail, Krishi Udan and One District One Product, etc., that are aimed at promoting the promote commercial agriculture in the region.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR advised the KVK participants to scale-up the successful location specific technologies in their respective Districts. The DDG also urged the KVKs of the North-Eastern Hills Region for popularizing the latest technologies of various horticultural crops and livestock, more particularly, on promoting the Mithun farming in semi-intensive farming system besides, mainstreaming the ITKs in the region.
Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal emphasized on promoting the honeybee as pollinators in rapeseed & mustard for enhancing the crop's yield.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Bidyut C. Deka, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Umiam highlighted the salient achievements of the Institute and the KVKs including various special programmes conducted during 2019.
More than 100 participants from 43 KVKs, ICAR Institutes, CAU and Line Departments from 5 NEH states of Manipur, Meghalya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
