The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata organized a two-day “Virtual Annual Zonal Workshop for 59 KVKs of ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata consisting of the states of Odisha, West Bengal and Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands” from 1st to 2nd July, 2020.
In his inaugural address, Shri Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare appreciated the performance of different activities of KVKs during the COVID-19 Pandemic situation. The Minister highlighted the importance and the guidelines to form FPOs in every District for the farmers’ benefit and the role of KVKs. Shri Choudhary urged upon “One District one crop”, “Per drop more crop”, “Farmers’ FIRST Programme”, replication of climate resilient technologies in climate vulnerable Districts and Doubling Farmers’ Income, etc.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) applauded the KVKs role in communicating the advisories in different languages to the farmers during harvesting their crops under the COVID-19 Pandemic. He also emphasized on developing integrated farming systems, particularly role of horticultural crops, developing and using highly saline and deserted lands for agricultural production and adoption of villages by the KVKs, etc.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR accentuated on developing the agro-tourism in KVKs, harnessing fish production in the state of Odisha and West Bengal, quality seed and planting materials production, processing, value-addition and marketing. Dr. Singh also urged for the successful implementation of Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan in the zone.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. S.K. Roy, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata presented the achievements of the zone during the last one year.
The various ICAR Publications namely - “Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan: Towards agricultural development in Aspirational Districts”, “Inspiring farmers through Farmers’ FIRST Programme”, “ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata News”, “NICRA Newsletter”, etc. were released during the occasion.
The senior officials of ICAR Institutes and State Agricultural Universities also participated in the Webinar.
