DG, ICAR Inaugurates National Workshop on Vertical Farming

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) inaugurated National Workshop on Vertical Farming: Status, Researchable Issues and Future Prospects here today. The workshop was organized by the Horticultural Science Division, ICAR in collaboration with the Amity University, Noida.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mohapatra said cultivating selective crops under Vertical Farming in the urban and semi-urban areas will provide employment opportunity and help in managing bio-waste and creating healthy environment. He stressed upon the need to take up research on important components concerning Vertical Farming such as systems of harvesting of solar energy, efficient management of nutrients and water, pests and diseases, automation and artificial intelligence etc.  .

Dr. A. K. Singh, DDG (Hort. Sci.), ICAR emphasized on need to minimize carbon foot print in production, transport and marketing of horticultural crops through Vertical Farming.

Dr. T. Janakiram, ADG (Hort. Sci.), explained the objectives of the workshop and need for establishing links with the stockholder, designing the course of vertical farming for PG education and identification of skill needs.  

Dr. Nutan Kaushik, DG, Amity Food and Agriculture Foundation, Amity University maintained the advantages of vertical farming such as increased year round - production.

Dr. Rajiv Sharma, DG, AFSTIA & Senior VP, RBEF, Amity University also shared his views on the occasion.  
In all, eighteen presentations on Vertical Farming: Present Status, Researchable Issues and Way Forward in horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, flower crops, potato, tropical tuber crops, spices, medicinal and aromatic plants and, mushrooms were made by scientists and researchers from ICAR Institutes, State Agricultural Universities and Departments and other Private Sector Undertakings.
