An Interactive meeting between ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Kolkata and KVK Ashokenagar, North 24 Parganas was held for the implementation of the RKVY-RAFTAAR funded mega-project promoting climate resilient model IFS in coastal saline low lands of the world heritage delta Sundarbans blocks. The project will address fallow land before and after kharif, replacement of low yielding paddy varieties and scarcity of freshwater during rabi/summer.
Dr. Amitava Bandyopadhyya, a former national coordinator for the National Agricultural Science Fund (NASF), ICAR, emphasized the necessity of collecting primary data about the agro-meteorological parameters and conducting a comparison of the project's results with those of the previous year's harvest.
Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, spoke about testing the soil parameters, organic matter assessment, and soil salinity of excavated abandoned fields and water bodies.
The action points include de-siltation of the derelict pond and utilizing the harvested rainwater for second and third crops without harvesting the groundwater, floating rice seedbed nursery, floating duck farming over the pond water, year-round vegetable cultivation over the pond dyke, and aerial cultivation of viny vegetable crops over the pond and climate adaptable fish farming.
