ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology organised a 3-day international training programme on the FAO Assessment Tool for Laboratories and Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Systems (FAO ATLASS). The event, organized by the Microbiology, Fermentation, and Biotechnology Division of ICAR-CIFT, aimed to equip researchers with the knowledge to effectively use the FAO ATLASS tool in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the programme brought together 31 researchers from the Indian Network for Fisheries and Animal Sciences on Antimicrobial Resistance (INFAAR).
In his inaugural address, Dr George Ninan, Director, ICAR-CIFT, highlighted the urgent need to address AMR within the fisheries and animal sciences sectors. He stressed the growing challenge of AMR in these areas and the critical role of capacity-building efforts in tackling this issue.
The training focused on the application of the FAO ATLASS tool in laboratory settings and surveillance systems, aiming to strengthen India’s ability to monitor and manage AMR in these vital sectors. The programme is expected to significantly enhance the researchers' skills, leading to more effective strategies for AMR containment.
