One day Awareness-cum-Training Programme on Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers’ Rights Act (PPV&FRA) for experts of Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Rajasthan and Gujarat has been organised at ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Jodhpur.
Dr R R Hanchinal, Chairperson PPV&FRA and Chief Guest of the event, spoke on the status of Plant Varieties and its registration by the farmers in India. To accelerate agricultural development, it is necessary to protect plants breeders' rights, he added.
Dr O.P. Yadav, Director, ICAR-CAZRI, Jodhpur & Guest of the honour for the event stressed that there is a need to document the local varieties practiced by farmers. He narrated about the Kharchiya local variety of Wheat which is documented by KVK, Pali. He appealed to the KVKs of both the states for facilitating the farmers in getting registered their varieties at district level.
Dr S.K Singh, Director, ATARI, Jodhpur said Protection of Plant Varieties will facilitate the growth of seed industry which will ensure the availability of high quality seeds and planting material to the farmers.
About 30 KVK experts participated in this programme.
