ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, Udhagamandalam, organized a training and farmer-scientist interaction meeting in Bendarawadi village, Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka. The event focused on mushroom farming for livelihood enhancement and climate-smart soil and water conservation (SWC) technologies for rainfed farming under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) today.
Dr M. Madhu, Director, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun, highlighted the significance of soil and water conservation in dryland farming and stressed the need for awareness of advanced technologies and organized marketing channels through FPOs, SHGs, and user groups. He also emphasized value addition to enhance income and advised farmers to maintain continuous contact with relevant government departments to access various schemes. Dr Madhu also inaugurated the mushroom unit and distributed farming tools and seedlings to SC beneficiary farmers.
Dr Somasundaram Jayaraman, Head, ICAR-IISWC Research Centre, Ooty, emphasized efficient resource use and the importance of appropriate conservation measures.
Shri Nanjappa, Former Member, Command Area Development Authority, Government of Karnataka, urged farmers to adopt advanced SWC technologies for improved livelihoods.
Shri Nanjunda Prasad, Director, Karnataka Milk Federation, commended ICAR-IISWC’s efforts in reaching out to SC farmers under the SCSP.
Around 250 farmers participated in the event, engaging with scientists and exploring an exhibition on SWC technologies.
The event was coordinated by Dr HC Hombegowda and Dr SM Vanitha, Senior Scientists, under the guidance of Dr Somasundaram Jayaraman.
