Farmers from Basti district in Uttar Pradesh underwent comprehensive training on Improved Production Technologies for Hi-Tech Banana Cultivation at the ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirapalli, in collaboration with the State Department of Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh. The training aimed to equip farmers with advanced banana cultivation technologies, including automation, sensor-based irrigation, IoT-enabled disease detection, and drone-based value-added product production.
Dr. R. Selvarajan, Director of ICAR- National Research Centre for Banana, highlighted the institution's global leadership in banana research and its significance. The Centre is said to possess Asia's largest gene bank for bananas. Dr. Selvarajan stated that ICAR-NRCB, developed 50 technologies acquired four patents in the past year, and is actively working on gene editing to combat fusarium wilt, a significant issue in Uttar Pradesh. He also informed the farmers that the Centre has developed ‘Grand Naine’ mutants resistant to wilt diseases and a “No2Wilt” bio consortium to combat the disease.
Farmers were also taken to export clusters, Theni and Thirukatupalli to witness gardenland and wetland banana cultivation practices and adopt various technologies used for banana export.
