ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute Barrackpore in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal has initiated cage culture in Kangsabati Reservoir, Bankura district, West Bengal, which is the first of its kind towards enhancing the livelihood of tribal fishers of the district.

ICAR-CIFRI GI Cage battery was inaugurated today with the release of fingerlings.
The fingerlings were released by the Chief Guest, Shri Biplob Roy Choudhury, Minister of Fisheries, Govt of West Bengal, and Guest of Honour, Smt Jyotsna Mandi, Minister of State, Food and Supplies, Govt of West Bengal in the presence of Shri Avanindra Singh, IAS, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and other dignitaries.
Shri Roy Choudhury applauded the ICAR-CIFRI’s initiatives with the proven Cage culture technology which would go a long way in resolving the livelihood issues of the fishers of this reservoir.
Smt Mandi urged the tribal fishers of the district to join hands with this historical venture which would not only address their nutritional security but also provide livelihood support to in a more pragmatic manner.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI urged for solidarity towards the success of this flagship programme in West Bengal.

The programme was attended by 200 tribal fishers of the district, officials of the Collectorate, Joint Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director of fisheries Govt. of West Bengal.
