“The ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair should carry forward the vision to make the Island as Garden of Eden by 2047 under the Mission Mode Programme of Plant Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, Community Garden and Save Seeds Campaign”, said Shri Jitendra Narain, I.A.S., Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Shri Narain was on his visit to the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands today.
He visited the Experimental and Demonstration Blocks of heliconia, alpinia, other exotic flower block, spice crops, dragon fruit cultivation, modern pig farm, integrated farming system model for hilly land and nursery for underutilized fruits and spice crops, etc., at the Garacharma Farm..
During his interaction with the Institute’s Scientists, Shri Narain suggested for producing the planting materials like drumstick, jackfruit, papaya, banana, bael and other potential crops with the technological backings for supporting the Vision - 2047.
The Chief Secretary urged for developing the Garacharma Farm and Sippighat Farm as Agro-Eco-Tourist Points in joint venture with the Information, Publicity and Tourism Department, Andaman & Nicobar Administration. He also stressed on properly utilizing the land for planting trees, vegetables, fruits & flowers to make the Island self-sufficient and explore for the export potential.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair briefed about the ongoing research programmes and technologies developed by the Institute.
