12th March, 2021, Assam
Under the Climate-Smart Inland Fisheries initiative, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata stocked a total of 6,000 fingerlings of indigenous carps (comprising of L. catla, L. rohita, C. mrigala, L. bata, L. gonius) and Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) in a Pen enclosure constructed for raising the advanced fingerlings and for table-fish production today. This will increase the adaptive capacity of the fishers and provide additional livelihood security to the Beel Fishers.
The Beels (Floodplain Wetlands) of Assam are known as repository of a variety of fish species. The recent climatic variability and anthropogenic threats in North-East India is a challenging issue faced by the Wetland Fishers of the region. It has considerably impacted the income and livelihood accrued from the resources. This requires region-specific appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategies to maintain sustainability.
To deal with the problem effectively, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata has been demonstrating the Pen Culture as a Climate-Resilient Technology for the Wetland (Beel) Fishers in 47-Morakolong Beel, Morigaon District, Assam during the past two years under the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) Project. In the past, the Pen Culture of Indian major carps Labeo catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala along with Small Indigenous Fish (SIF) species Amblypharyngodon mola, Gudusia chapra and Puntius sophore in the Beel resulted in considerable increase in production of the SIFs benefiting the fishers’ community of the adjoining villages.
Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata along with the Heads of different Divisions of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata; Beel Manager and Field Staff of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., Guwahati were also present during the occasion.
More than 30 active fishers participated in the event.
