A Convergence meeting between ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-VI, Guwahati, and Coconut Development Board, Regional Office, Guwahati was held at ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-VI, Guwahati today. The main aim of the meeting was to brief about different schemes and to discuss thoroughly on how to implement various Coconut Development Board Schemes through Krishi Vigyan Kendras’.

Dr. Hanumanthe Gowda, Chief Coconut Development Officer, Coconut Development Board, Kochi highlighted the importance of the different schemes for enhanced productivity and area expansion in potential areas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He also stressed the importance of the promotion of health-friendly and demand-based value-added coconut products, supply of quality planting materials, and area expansion in non-traditional belts by extending financial assistance and encouraging marketing.
Dr. Rajat Kumar Pal, Director, Coconut Development Board, Regional Office, Guwahati, briefed about various schemes under CDB and ways to avail of the different schemes by different stakeholders. He also highlighted flagship schemes under CDB like the Area Expansion Programme, Production and Distribution of Quality Planting Materials, Technology Mission on Coconut, Establishment of Organic Manure Unit, replanting and rejuvenation, and palm insurance scheme.
Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director, ICAR, ATARI, Guwahati, highlighted the need and importance of the schemes for the farming community. He emphasised the importance of quality planting material, suitable varieties for North East, adoption of a scientific package of practices for enhanced productivity, etc. He also pointed out few schemes such as Establishment of Demonstration cum-Seed Production Farms, Establishment of Nucleus Coconut Seed Garden, Expansion of area under coconut, Establishment of Organic Manure Unit, etc. can be effectively implemented by KVKs through ATARI for the benefit of farmers.
Shri. K. Zaman, Senior Agriculture Development Officer, Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Government of Assam put forward the State Department Schemes and asked KVKs to provide progressive farmers to take up various initiatives.
The meeting was also attended by Scientists and staff from local ICAR Institutes and KVKs.
