ICAR-NAARM conducted a skill development training programme (three days) on “Improved Crop Management Technologies and Value Addition of Millets” for the SC farmers belonging from four villages (Santha Kothavalasa, Kondavalasa, Kondraguda and Isakapalem)of Srikakulam District from 1st -3rdNovember, 2023 under SCSP, 2023-24 in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK),Amadalavalasa, Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh. Total 75 farmers including 28 women were participated in the training programme.
In the inauguralsessionDr.P.V. Satyanarayana, Head, ARS, Ragolu educated the farmers about importance of millets as it contains good fiber, protein and minerals, therefore, its consumption is essential for heart and anemic patients. He also explained four management practices in millets like selection of seed, time of sowing,time of fertilizer application and time of irrigation.
Sri. S. Ramchandra Rao, Project director, ATMA, suggested the farmers for best utilization of KVK Technologies regarding millet production. He also discussed about how important millets are in everyday life and why the year 2023 has been declared as international year of millets. Later, Dr. K. BhagyaLakshmi,programme coordinator, KVK,Aamadalavalasa, has suggested the farmers for better utilization of value addition in millets in day to day life and promoted entrepreneurship in value edition of millets.
The farmerswere trained on the aspects related to improved package of practices of millets, nutritional significance and health benefits of millets, importance of bio fertilizers in present agriculture, role of millets in fish and animal nutrition, preparation of diversified value added products with millets, packing, branding, FSSAI registration procedures also an exposure visit to millet processing unit to ARS, Vizianagaram was done.
During the valedictory session, Dr. D. Srinivas, Associate Dean, Agricultural College, Naira has suggested the farmers to form clusters to get seed processing units on subsidy. Also enlighted the farmers about importance of millets and suggested to select and cultivate suitable varieties recommended to this region for better yields and advised the farmers to utilize, technical support given by KVK to the maximum extent.
Sri.B.V. Ramana Murty, a progressive farmer, encouraged the farmers about the cultivation of millets and emphasized that there is a need to change the food habits of the farmers.
Dr. M. Ramesh Naik, Scientist, ICAR-NAARM, Dr.S. Kiran Kumar and Dr. B. Suneetha, KVK, Aamadalavalasa, coordinated the training programme.
